What does a Battery Management System (BMS) do?

2024-07-09
Latest company news about What does a Battery Management System (BMS) do?

The battery management system (BMS) is equivalent to the battery manager, mainly in order to intelligently manage and maintain each battery unit, monitor the status of the battery, prevent the battery from overcharging and overdischarging, in order to extend the service life of the battery. The BMS battery management system unit includes a BMS battery management system, a control module, a display module, a wireless communication module, an electrical device, a battery pack for powering an electrical device, and a collection module for collecting information about a battery pack.

The role of the battery management system (BMS) is mainly manifested in the following aspects:

1.Data acquisition: accurately obtain the working status of the power battery, and better implement management countermeasures;

2. State detection: Use established algorithms and strategies to estimate the state of the battery pack, including SOC, comics, SOP and energy state;

3. Safety protection: voltage (overcharge), undervoltage (overdischarge), smoke, overcurrent, ultra-high temperature, short circuit fault, joint loosening, insulation capacity reduction and electrolyte leakage, but also involves the fault diagnosis of electronic components such as sensors, actuators and controllers, to protect battery safety;

4. Charging control: According to the real-time characteristics of the power battery, the temperature level and the power level of the charger, the charger is controlled to charge the battery safely;

5. Energy control: cope with the dynamic load caused by the complex vehicle conditions such as rapid acceleration, rapid braking, uphill and downhill, rationally control the energy output of the power battery and the energy recovery of regenerative braking to achieve the best performance of the vehicle;

6. Balanced management: Due to the accumulation of errors in the production process, transportation and storage, and electronic components, there is inevitably inconsistency between the power battery cells, and active or passive balance is adopted to reduce the inconsistency of the battery;

7. Thermal management: the battery is not only affected by the ambient temperature, but also by its own charge and discharge heat production, need to be heated or heat dissipation according to the situation, to ensure that the power battery works at the most suitable temperature, play the performance of the power battery, extend the service life;

8. Information management :BMS needs to integrate multiple functional modules and reasonably coordinate the communication between modules. Due to the huge amount of data in operation,BMS needs to process and screen the operation data of the power battery, store key data, and maintain communication with network nodes such as the vehicle controller.
